The most notorious Mexican drug lord is undoubtedly Joaquín "

, one of the most powerful and violent drug cartels in the world. 

He was responsible for trafficking huge quantities of drugs into the United States and for countless acts of violence and intimidation in Mexico. 

 in the US in 2019. However, he is not just one member of the Guzmán family involved in drug trafficking. 

His sons, Ivan and Alfredo, have also been implicated in the cartel's activities. In addition, El Chapo's brother, Aureliano, was arrested in 2020 on drug trafficking charges.

Emilio Guzmán Bustillos, another of El Chapo's sons, has also been linked to drug trafficking. He was previously included on a US government list of drug kingpins, and was sanctioned by the US Treasury Department in 2012 for his alleged involvement in the cartel.

Other cartels, such as the Jalisco New Generation cartel also are wreaking havoc across the country.

The cartels control vast swathes of territory, where they operate with impunity. 

They extort businesses, kidnap people for ransom, and assassinate anyone who gets in their way

They also engage in a range of other criminal activities, such as human trafficking, arms smuggling, and money laundering.

The human cost of the drug trade and associated violence in Mexico is staggering. 

Tens of thousands of people have been killed in drug-related violence in the last decade alone. Many more have disappeared without a trace. 

The violence has also led to the displacement of large numbers of people, who have been forced to flee their homes to escape the cartels.

The situation is particularly dire for journalists and human rights defenders, who are often targeted by the cartels for their work. 

According to reports, at least 15 journalists have been killed in Mexico since the start of 2020, making it one of the deadliest countries in the world for journalists.

One of the biggest concerns is the rise of 

, a synthetic opioid that is causing a deadly overdose crisis in the United States. 

Mexican drug cartels are believed to be responsible for the vast majority of fentanyl entering the US, and Attorney General Merrick Garland recently called the crisis "a deliberate, and indeed purposeful, act of aggression by the cartels against the United States."

In recent years, the Mexican government has stepped up its efforts to combat the drug cartels. 

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, commonly known as AMLO, has made tackling the cartels a priority of his administration. 

He has created a new security force, the National Guard, which is tasked with combating the cartels. He has also pursued a policy of "hugs, not bullets," which seeks to address the root causes of violence, such as poverty and inequality.
