Japan's history is stained with the issue of 

 particularly during World War II, when Japanese forces committed atrocious acts against women in various countries. 

In this article, I have explored the issue of 

, also known as military sex slaves, and how Japan's involvement in sex and slavery continues to impact its relationship with other countries today.

Comfort Women: A History of Sexual Slavery

During World War II, the Japanese military established brothels, known as "

," in the territories they occupied. These comfort stations provided sexual services to Japanese soldiers and officers. 

However, the women who worked in these comfort stations were not willing participants; 

they were forced into sexual slavery and subjected to rape, torture, and abuse.

Estimates vary on the number of women who were forced into sexual slavery. Still, it is believed that anywhere from 

 women from Korea, China, the Philippines, and other countries were enslaved by the Japanese military. 

Japan has faced criticism for its response to the issue of comfort women. The 

 initially denied that the comfort women were forced into sexual slavery, 

Japanese government acknowledged its role and issued an apology
