The derailment was attributed to a broken axle, a rod connecting two train wheels, according to the National Transportation Safety Board, which is responsible for investigating fatal rail accidents. 

A fire under the train was visible in surveillance video from a Salem, Ohio, manufacturer before the train arrived in East Palestine. 

The exact cause of the derailment is still being looked into.

The EPA has been aggressively keeping an eye on the environment in East Palestine and the nearby municipalities.

Of 291 inspected residences as of February 13th, the EPA had not found any vinyl chloride or hydrogen chloride, which is a chemical generated while burning vinyl chloride. Another 181 properties were still awaiting screening. Authorities have informed locals that the area's drinking water is safe.

Residents near the derailment have complained of a variety of health complaints, including nausea and a burning sensation in their eyes,
