The second-most valuable cryptocurrency in the world will undergo a long-awaited technological change on September 14 around midnight Pacific time with the completion of the Ethereum merging.

Due to Ethereum's prominence in the cryptocurrency world, the adjustment may have repercussions for investors in the entire market. Numerous other cryptocurrencies can be supported by the Ethereum technology, which is also frequently used to conduct decentralised cryptocurrency financial transactions.

The merge could decrease the network's power consumption by more than 99.95% and aim to shift Ethereum away from the energy-intensive mining process.

Why then is the old engine malfunctioning? Proof-of-work is a technique used to safely add new transactions and other data to the Mainnet blockchain, which has been in use since Ethereum's launch in 2015. Before being permitted to add a new block, proof-of-work requires user computers to successfully complete increasingly challenging calculations. Many cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, employ this process known as mining. Although secure, mining consumes a lot of energy. The Ethereum proof-of-work process uses as much energy annually as some entire nations do in the same period.

A less energy-intensive alternative is proof-of-stake. Users who want to participate in the verification process stake their own bitcoin, which is a procedure similar to staking, rather than committing electricity, which powers computational power. These people, known as validators, are chosen at random to validate newly added data before it is added to a block. If they verify valid facts, they get bitcoins. The "Beacon chain," a proof-of-stake ledger of accounts that has been adding and confirming transactions separate from those on Mainnet since its inception in December 2020, is a key piece of technology underlying the integration. The Ethereum platform is used to run a wide range of different technologies and digital assets. You won't be impacted if you own any of those, either.
