The U.S. Congress approved tens of billions of dollars in aid to help Ukraine battle a Russian invasion on Wednesday.

 According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, this funding was an 

investment in world security rather than a donation.

Zelensky expressed his hope that lawmakers would continue to support Ukraine on a bipartisan basis during his first travel outside of his nation since the crisis broke out in February. This is 

significant because Republicans are expected to gain control of the House on January 3.

Zelensky, wearing the khaki fatigues that have served as his official uniform for the past 300 days of the fight, remarked, 

"Your money is not charity." "It is an investment in democracy and global security."

Zelensky stated that the aid to Ukraine was an investment and not a charity

needed to connect with House Republicans since they have expressed growing doubt about continuing to deliver so much help to Ukraine.

There were several loud applauses when Zelensky entered the virtually packed chamber. 

As he entered, three people held up a big Ukrainian flag.

"It is a great honour for me to be at the U.S. Congress and speak to you and all Americans. Against all doom and gloom scenarios, Ukraine did not fall. Ukraine is alive and kicking,"

"We defeated Russia in the battle for the minds of the world".

Zelensky's visit to the US Congress was historic and first outside Ukraine since the war started

Zelensky joined a long list of world leaders who have spoken at joint sessions of the Senate and House. 

This tradition dates back to Hawaiian King Kalakaua's visit in 1874 and has featured almost legendary visits by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill during the Second World War, in addition to kings, queens, and one pope.

Zelensky compared his country's struggle against Moscow's forces 

to major battles of World War Two and even the American Revolution,

 prompting members of the House and senators from all parties to frequently rush to their feet in support.

Despite Zelensky's claim that he and Biden discussed a 

 there are no indications that the war will stop anytime soon, and both Russia and Ukraine have shown a desire to continue fighting.

The United States has been instrumental in providing aid and equipment to Ukraine

"President Biden's backing for our peace initiative today makes me happy. Ladies and gentlemen, each of you today may contribute to the implementation to make sure that American leadership is strong, bicameral, and bipartisan,"

US aid for Ukraine touches astronomical numbers

In addition to providing military support, Zelensky's reception as a supporter of democracy sent a much deeper message. It was 

intended to send a message to Russian President Vladimir Putin that despite recent indications of dissatisfaction among some Republican senators over the mounting cost, the United States and its NATO allies stand resolutely behind Ukraine.

But amidst all the applause and pats on the back that Zelensky got from US lawmakers, 

there's a longstanding demand of Kyiv that still remains unfulfilled.

So what is the demand that's made the US uncomfortable? What were the key moments of Zelensky's visit? And what aid has the US offered? 

Ukrainian President Zelensky visited the United States on Wednesday amidst much fanfare. Notably, this was 

Zelensky's first overseas trip since Russia's invasion began.

And no surprises about where the president chose to go. He met President Joe Biden at the White House. He thanked Washington, DC for its support amidst the war.  

The Ukrainian delegation made a host of demands for 

 that will help them combat Russian troops. While the US Promised more drones and missile systems, 

it is in no mood to budge for one set of weapons - long-range missiles.

According to Politico, Kyiv was expected to make another request for army tactical missile systems. Quoting US officials part of the initial discussions, 

the White House is apprehensive about sending these weapons.

could risk provoking Putin using potentially even more lethal weapons inside Ukraine and that's a path the US wants to stay away from at all costs.

this aid enjoys widespread bipartisan support, including from the Republicans.

 Senate Minority Leader Republican Mitch McConnell, who earlier opposed Biden's ambitious funding plans, now was one of the first Republicans to back it. 

helping equip our friends in Eastern Europe to win this war is also a direct investment in reducing Vladimir Putin's future capabilities

 to menace America, threaten our allies and contest our core interests. 

Without US support, it would be impossible for Kyiv to withstand Russian aggression. 

With more weapons coming to Ukraine, Zelensky is hopeful that Washington's support would help him gain ground in the battlefield.
