Although the overall intensity of violence appeared to have decreased compared to previous nights, the riots shed light on the deep discontent prevalent in low-income neighborhoods and highlighted issues of discrimination and limited opportunity. The crisis presents a significant challenge to President Emmanuel Macron's leadership, highlighting the need to address fundamental grievances and promote social cohesion.

The 17-year-old victim, known publicly as Nahel, was laid to rest in a Muslim ceremony on Saturday, sparking raw emotions in the Paris suburb of Nanterre, where he lived. As night fell over the French capital, a small crowd gathered on the iconic Champs-Elysees to protest Nahel's death and police violence. However, their demonstration was met with a significant police presence, patrolling the avenue and its luxury boutiques. In other parts of Paris, protesters set fire to barricades and clashed with law enforcement, responding with tear gas and stun grenades.

A particularly alarming incident occurred during the riots when a burning car crashed into the mayor's house in l'Hay-les-Roses, a suburb of Paris. The mayor's wife and one of their children were injured while they slept while the mayor himself watched the situation from City Hall. The attack, which the mayor characterized as a new level of horror and shame, prompted calls for the government to declare a state of emergency. Authorities are investigating the incident as attempted murder, with a preliminary investigation revealing a fire accelerant in a bottle discovered in the car.

A total of 719 arrests had been made across the country by early Sunday, attributed to a massive security deployment aimed at quelling the escalating unrest. While some residents in targeted neighborhoods and business owners affected by the looting have welcomed the increased police presence, others see police behavior as a central problem contributing to the crisis. The situation has damaged President Macron's diplomatic standing, leading to the postponement of his planned state visit to Germany, the first by a French president in 23 years.

French Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti issued a warning that young individuals who share calls for violence on platforms such as Snapchat could face legal consequences. President Macron also criticized social media for fueling violence. Concerts and events across the country were canceled due to the unrest, resulting in severe damage to some neighborhoods. However, life continued in other parts of France, with activities such as the Tour de France and the pétanque championship continuing.

All necessary activities should be completed by 18:00. However, I must commend the strict security measures and the dedicated efforts of the police in maintaining law and order. Today, while returning to France from Italy, I witnessed thorough checks by the border police on every bus, including the examination of passports. In our bus, an individual without a passport was taken into custody by the police. These measures reflect the commitment of the authorities to ensure the safety and security of the nation.
