Sierra Leone President Maada Bio has been sworn in for his second term following his victory in the polls. The electoral body confirmed Bio's victory, despite protests from his rivals. His party, the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP), won 56.1% of the total ballots, representing almost 1.6 million votes. The closest challenger Samura Kamara of the opposition All People's Congress (APC) won 41% of the vote.

Chief Electoral Commissioner Mohamed Konneh officially declared Bio as the duly elected president and shortly thereafter Bio was sworn in at the State House. In his speech, he expressed gratitude to the citizens for their trust and dedication, stressing that their collective triumph belonged to every Sierra Leonean.

However, Kamara and the APC rejected the election results, characterizing them as a "frontal attack on our fledgling democracy". The APC had earlier disputed the preliminary results, claiming they were "rigged numbers" and decried the lack of transparency during the vote counting process. Their agents were denied access to attend counting centers and verify results before the announcement, according to the APC.

International observers have also expressed concerns about the integrity of the electoral process. The Carter Center, a watchdog group, said the charting process lacked sufficient transparency. They recorded cases of broken seals and improperly opened ballot boxes in three of the five census centers. These controversies and irregularities damaged the credibility of the election and raised doubts about the transparency of the result.

The election itself, held on June 24, was the fifth since the end of Sierra Leone's civil war in 2002. Voters expressed concerns about high inflation, unemployment rates, political violence and corruption. These issues, among others, were key factors shaping their decisions in the election.

Although the Election Commission described the overall process as relatively peaceful, there were reports of outbreaks of violence and delays in voting in certain areas. The APC accused the country's security forces of besieging its headquarters in the capital, Freetown, and allegedly firing live rounds into the facility at a post-election press conference. Kamara referred to the incident as an "assassination attempt", but police denied live ammunition was fired.

In President Maada Bio's second term, he is likely to continue to address the challenges facing Sierra Leone, including economic stability, job creation and the fight against corruption. However, disputed election results may contribute to a tense political climate in the country, requiring efforts to overcome differences and restore faith in the democratic process.
