What happened in Texas? Why are migrants being used for political arguments?

A Texas county sheriff has launched a criminal inquiry into aircraft that last week brought scores of migrants from Texas to Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. Florida's Republican governor DeSantis claimed credit for the operation, which the White House referred to as a political stunt.

Around 50 migrants were "lured under false pretenses" on the streets of San Antonio, housed in a hotel, transported by bus to airplanes, and "stranded unceremoniously in Martha's Vineyard," a wealthy vacation island, "for nothing other than a photo op," Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar claimed at a news conference on Monday.

Salazar stated, "What enrages me the most about this situation is that we have 48 people who are already struggling. "I think they were taken advantage of"

The Democratic Salazar claimed that his decision had nothing to do with his political party. "From the standpoint of human rights, it is wrong. These people were subjected to wrongdoing."

In response to being abandoned, immigrants have been "more than prepared to depart Bexar County," according to a spokesperson for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

According to Taryn Fenske, the communications director for DeSantis, "Florida provided them the chance to seek greener pastures in a sanctuary jurisdiction that offered greater resources for them."

Salazar stated that his office was collaborating with victim advocacy groups and individual lawyers on their behalf and could communicate with federal authorities as necessary.

DeSantis, who is running for re-election in November and is anticipated to run for president in 2024, took credit for the two flights out of San Antonio while attacking Democratic President Joe Biden for how he handled a record number of border crossings.

In sending migrants to Democratic-controlled communities, DeSantis follows Republican governors from Texas and Arizona. Buses of migrants from Texas were dropped off near Vice President Kamala Harris's apartment in Washington.

Since many migrants that arrive in Florida are from Texas, DeSantis claimed last week that Florida had paid for the migrants' flights to Martha's Vineyard.

Republicans have been attempting to put Democratic leaders in charge of dealing with border crossers. The Biden administration claimed that immigrants are being used as "political pawns" by the Republicans.

One migrant told Reuters that he and his family were approached outside of a San Antonio migrant resource center and given lodging, support for 90 days, assistance with work permits, and English classes. However, the specifics of how the flights were organized and paid for are yet unknown. He claimed that they were taken aback when their plane touched down on an island best known for being a summer getaway for wealthy, liberal Americans.

According to federal figures released on Monday, through the month of August this fiscal year, which started last October, American border agents detained nearly 2 million migrants at the border with Mexico. A public health order that has been in effect since the start of the COVID pandemic prevents them from being expelled to Mexico includes an increasing number of Cubans, Nicaraguans, Venezuelans, and others. Many people want to file for asylum.
