A Uniform Civil Code for the entire country. This is a topic that has been debated for many years. 

Recently, the issue has come up in the public sphere again.

On Friday, December 9th, the Rajya Sabha approved a private member's bill

 concerning the application of the Uniform Civil Code that was put out by 

Kirodi Lal Meena of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

 that it would fracture the nation and harm its varied cultures, but they were 

would guarantee that there is one rule for the entire nation that governs all religious and tribal communities in their private affairs,

 including property, marriage, inheritance, adoption, and other personal matters.

A Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has received opposition from Islamic quarters

As a result, current personal laws based on religion, such as the 

Muslim Personal Law Application Act (1937), Hindu Marriage Act (1955), and the Hindu Succession Act (1956),

 So let's dissect this problem by asking important questions.

The state shall endeavour to secure for the citizens a Uniform Civil Code throughout the territory of India,

 according to Article 44 of the Indian Constitution.

The UCC is contained in the Directive Principles of State Policy in the Indian constitution

because it is a directive concept of state policy, it cannot be enforced.

 instructs the state to outlaw the use of substances that are harmful to one's health and intoxicating beverages. However, most states in the nation sell alcohol for consumption.

On the question of whether a state has the authority to establish a standard civil code, legal scholars disagree. According to some analysts, 

state governments have the authority to impose it because matters like marriage, divorce, inheritance, and property rights fall under the Concurrent List of the Constitution, a list of 52 subjects on which laws can be established by both the centre and the states.

Article 44 indicates that a UCC shall be applied to "citizens throughout the territory of India," which would seem to rule out the sovereignty of individual states.

Giving governments the authority to enact a UCC can also present a number of practical challenges. What happens, for instance, if Gujarat has a UCC and two individuals who are married there relocate to Rajasthan? Which statute will they abide by?

And since India is not a federal country or in other words does not follow the US model of federalism, such sovereignty of states is not desired.
