                                                                                                                                For the first time in history, scientists have observed a rare phenomena in which metals start to heal themselves after spontaneous cracking.                                                          The key point is that this observation highly contradicts with the long held scientific theories. It can lead to the revolution in the field of engineering. If this newly observed phenomena is harnessed, the potential are wide ranging and self healing engines, air planes and bridges that could autonomously heal the wear and tear, thereby enhancing their safety and longevity. 

                 This discovery was made by a research team from Sandia national laboratories and Texas     A & M university. Their discoveries were described on 19 July 2023 in journal 

" What we have confirmed is that metals have their own intrinsic natural ability to heal themselves at least in the case  of fatigue damage at a nanoscale" 

                      It's a common cause for machine failure. This damage is microscopic initially but then eventually leads to the bigger cracks and results in machine failure.  

The fissure Boyce and his team saw disappear was one of these tiny but consequential fractures measured in nanometers. This is the solution to the unprecedented cycling loading that leads to the smaller and then eventually larger cracks. These cracks has major impact on economy losses, these fractures lead to the bigger failures leave losses of Hundreds of billions of dollars annually.
