Cyber Espionage is a particular area of contention between the US and China. The PLA are reported to be behind this, funding, directing, managing and collating information, particularly about commercial targets of America and its allies. Strategically, some Chinese see cyberespionage as fair game because the virtual space puts them on an equal footing with the United States: the dice are not loaded against China, as they clearly are in other areas of contention.

In cyberspace, there is a golden opportunity to put up a fight in a place where there are no agreed international conventions and where confusion and obfuscation can reign. It is the only true frontier territory left, and one that the Chinese feel they have every right to try to colonize.

Although military cooperation between PRC & USA is very minimal and the two also don't share a common vision of the Global Finance System, the two agree to cooperate on the climate crisis. It is because both were proactive to bind the International community into a new obligation towards climate that the Paris Accords could see the light of the day.

The Communists in Beijing realize that China has a growing middle class which is affected by rapid unsustainable industrialization. This section's disillusionment with the Party could be a killer blow for the regime. Hence, China understands the need to be politically connected with the US in the arena of climate change. This further helps their own geopolitical image as a responsible power.
