China has commenced the construction of the Pinglu Canal, an inland waterway spanning 134.2 kilometres, in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in South China connecting Henghzhou city with Qinzhou, a port city located on the southern tip of China. 

The estimated cost of the project stands at 72.7 billion yuan. Within the framework of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership that China signed with ASEAN nations, this canal is set to play a vital role in facilitating China-ASEAN bilateral trade to strengthen the economic interdependence in the region. 

The canal reduces internal distance by 560 kilometres. It will enable goods to reach the port of Qinzhou in Guangxi province, a line of communication between China and ASEAN bilateral trade flow. The Guangxi province also shares its border with Vietnam. 

The canal is expected to become operational by 2026, becoming one of China's largest internal waterways that paves the way for linking Guangxi province via the Qinjiang River. While ecological concerns surround the project, it is anticipated to significantly enhance trade between China and ASEAN by the end of this decade.
