Started in 2017 as a forum to discuss Security in the Indo-Pacific, the Republic of China / Taiwan has been proactive in gathering the support of the international community through the Ketagalan Security Forum.

At the recently held edition of the Ketagalan Security Forum 2023, the three retired Chiefs of Indian Armed Forces—Admiral Karambir Singh, Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhaduria, and General Manoj Naravane—of the Indian Navy, Air Force, and Army, respectively, were invited in private capacity by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan.

In her opening remarks, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen emphasised a few points. She highlighted that the stability of the Taiwan Strait is linked to the stability of the Indo-Pacific, which is further linked to the future of the 21st century.

She advocated for a greater role for Taiwan in the democratic world and emphasised the support Taiwan has received from the Western world. She exclaimed the need to stand up to the People’s Republic of China in order to preserve the rules-based international order as the global power confrontation between the Democratic world and the Authoritarian world grows.

While promoting the indigenous industries of Taiwan, she stressed the need for Taiwan to be a critical member of International Supply Chain restructuring in the domains of Biotechnology, Artificial Intelligence, Renewable Energy, semiconductors, and high-precision manufacturing.

India’s Admiral Karambir Singh made an interesting remark on the sidelines of a seminar. He gave out his three-pronged strategy to avoid an escalation of the situation in the Taiwan Strait: prevent further destabilisation of the region, build power balance amongst the middle powers and the global south, and preserve the Balance Of Power in favour of the free world.

These comments from the Indian delegation come against the backdrop of India's CDS undertaking a study to evaluate India’s options if China invades Taiwan.
