The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) closed more than 67,000 social media accounts after a two-month-long probe under the 

 i.e., to clean social media from malicious news.

Chinese social media regulators targeted the popular Chinese social media apps like WeChat, Weibo, and Douyin, with more emphasis on self-media accounts, i.e., those accounts that are not government-approved or state-run but provide information about the government.

CAC deleted or removed more than 1.4 million posts for various issues like misinformation, impersonating state officials, and illegal profiteering. Further, 9.3 lakh accounts faced lenient actions like losing their entire follower base, temporary suspension, etc.

In an additional campaign, 1 lakh accounts were closed down for misrepresenting news anchors and media agencies to crack down on new AI-based fake news.

Nearly 25000 and 13000 accounts were under scrutiny for impersonating the various state and military departments, respectively. Even so, the state went on to penalise nearly 1.8 lakh people for impersonating news media agencies. Approximately 45,000 were shut down for indulging in activities like sensationalising hot topics, engaging in illicit monetization, etc.
