The Pearl River, also known as the Canton River, and its tributaries, including the Bei, Dong, and Xi rivers, among others, which empty into the South China Sea, make up the Pearl River Delta Plain. 

The shell with a pearl-like colour that was discovered at the river's bottom gave the place its name, Pearl. A significant delta is produced by the river and its tributaries. The region, which was formerly rural and heavily reliant on agriculture, is now China's economic engine, contributing almost 9% of the country's GDP as of 2016.

The region experienced exponential growth in terms of economic activity and the influx of people as a result of the economic reforms of 1979. The region is one of the most populous and prosperous regions in the world, according to the World Bank Group. Because there are so many supercities in this area, including Chaoshan, Fuzhou, Hong Kong, Macau, etc., it is also referred to as a megalopolis or supercity. By 2019, the region alone will have an economy worth nearly US$2 trillion, surpassing Canada.

The area is known as the "factory of the world" because of the presence of numerous industrial parks. Many manufacturing industries, including those for textiles, electronic goods, and toys, are based in the region. Additionally, the area is one of China's Special Economic Zones.

Air pollution, water pollution, and biodiversity loss are all problems that China's economic powerhouse is susceptible to. Because of untreated industrial waste dumps, the area is severely contaminated. The dumping of dangerous and heavy metals puts human health at risk, endangers the riverine ecosystem, and greatly threatens Chinese white dolphins. The region is frequently shrouded in brown smog, and it is one of the major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions.
