In a letter to President Joe Biden, a coalition of democratic legislators and senators voiced their opposition to the proposed "transit ban" and the expansion of Title 42, claiming that these policies go against international law and asylum regulations.

Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey, and Representative Greg Casar of Texas are among the 77 Democrats who signed the Wednesday letter pushing Biden to repeal Title 42 and scrap the transit prohibition regulation.

The Democrats' letter to Biden included the following request: "We urge the Biden Administration to engage quickly and meaningfully with members of Congress to find ways to adequately address migration to our southern border that do not include violating asylum law and our international obligations."

A pandemic-era law called Title 42 permits border patrol to detain migrants without subjecting them to a formal asylum procedure. To stop the COVID-19 pandemic from spreading, it was implemented during the Trump administration.
