Zelensky questioned the despot's ability and indicated that he might be dead while addressing the World Economic Forum via video link from the Swiss ski resort on Thursday.

Throughout Russia's invasion of Ukraine, there have been persistent rumors regarding Putin's health because the autocrat has been appearing in public less and less. In addition to raising concerns about Putin's health, Zelensky's remarks come as Putin skipped his yearly dip into Russia's arctic waters to celebrate the Orthodox Epiphany.

's wartime leader was discussing potential peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow when he suggested that Putin may in fact be dead.

'Right now I don't understand who to talk to. I am not sure whether the president of Russia is still alive.' he said.

'I don't understand that he's still alive or that it is him, particularly making decisions.'

Although some have questioned the despot's mortality, there is currently no proof that Putin is dead.

The Russian president, however, has been appearing in public far less frequently as a result of growing health-related rumors.

To increase speculation, Putin made no appearance for his traditional dip into icy waters to mark the Orthodox Epiphany.

While taking the yearly plunge into cracks in the ice in frozen rivers and lakes, notably in Siberia, where some people suffered bone-chilling air temperatures as low as minus 53C, many Russians were left looking for signs of the tyrant's health (minus 63F).

Yet so far the traditional images of dictator Putin stripping off and waging his own Cold War have not appeared.

Any evidence that he did not take his yearly dip will be seen by his supporters as further proof that, at the age of 70, his health is failing and that he may be battling cancer or other illnesses.

He did not take part last year - but did in 2021, with footage revealed to Russians.

Women the same age as him - in their 70s - were among the hundreds of thousands of Russian bathers across the country this year.

Putin's spokesman had denied Putin would dip in St Petersburg - where he had official engagements yesterday - but suggested he would in 'another place'.

Yet by late morning in Moscow, there were no images.

‘I don’t understand that he’s still alive or that it is him, particularly making decisions.

There is no verifiable evidence that Putin is seriously ill, and still less so that he has died.

But there has been much speculation that a body double may have been used for some appearances.

Experts believe Kremlin cronies would be keen to cover up his death in an attempt to cling on to power.
