Despite having practically the entire Russian army deployed in the conflict, Russia has not been able to "blow through" Ukraine's defenses.

In recent weeks, the Kremlin has stepped up its attacks on a large area of southern and eastern Ukraine, and a significant new onslaught has been widely anticipated.

"The Russian army has paid a steep price for it. According to our current estimates, the majority of the Russian army—roughly 97% of it—is in Ukraine, Ben Wallace told BBC Radio 4's Today program.

On Wednesday, Russia asserted that they had made progress on the Luhansk eastern front.

The office of President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that while Ukrainian forces have thwarted certain Russian assaults in Luhansk, "the situation in the region remains severe."

Russian heavy equipment and troops have reportedly been mobilized, according to Serhiy Haidai, the regional governor of Luhansk.

The attacks are coming in waves and from many directions, Haidai claimed. "Those who propagate the idea that purportedly our defense forces have drawn back beyond the line of the administrative border (of Luhansk) – this does not correspond to reality," he continued.

While attending a Nato security conference, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace stated that it might be years before the UK provides any fighter jets to Ukraine.

President Volodymyr Zelensky may even have to wait until the war with Russia is done before receiving British planes, the cabinet official predicted.

He told the BBC, "I don't think it's going to happen in the next few months or even years." These aircraft present a variety of significant capabilities and challenges. It will take a lot of time to learn to fly; you just cannot do it in a week or two.

He said, "We're not going to deploy, you know, 200 RAF troops into Ukraine in the heat of a war," claiming that a fleet of fighter jets would require "hundreds of engineers and pilots."

In recent weeks, U.S. President Joe Biden Washington said Washington would not supply F-16 jets to Ukraine and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also ruled out sending fighter aircraft.

Other countries, such as Poland, have signaled they are open to the idea but would only act with broad Western support. Britain has said it will provide training for Ukrainian fighter pilots but not yet whether it would supply jets.

Serhiy Haidai, the regional governor, stated on Wednesday that although Russian soldiers have mobilized and are bringing heavy equipment into the eastern Ukrainian region of Luhansk, Ukrainian forces are still defending the area.

On the eastern front, Russia claimed early on Wednesday that its forces had pierced two heavily constructed lines of Ukrainian defenses. Although it did not specify the area of Ukraine, the Russian Defense Ministry said that Ukrainian forces had fled Russian attacks in Luhansk.

There is a great deal of shelling, and aviation is already connected. According to Haidai, the attacks are coming in waves and from several directions. We can observe more (heavy) equipment as well as the movement of mobilized troops to the front.

But he added: “Those who spread the information that allegedly our defense forces have pulled back beyond the line of the administrative border (of Luhansk) -- this does not correspond to reality.”

The head of NATO stated on Wednesday that NATO nations are upping their production of 155 mm artillery shells and that this production must be increased much further to support Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.

According to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, the number of 155mm artillery projectiles is rising.

"So, yes, things are occurring, but we still need to go further and do more. This is turning into an exhausting war of attrition, and a war of logistics, he continued.

I can say with confidence that the destruction caused by a prolonged war is immeasurable. The longer a conflict drags on, the more lives are lost, the more infrastructure is destroyed, and the greater the economic and social costs become.
