The skull belonged to a man who died – aged over 40 years old – near the city of Jericho, today part of the Palestinian West Bank. 

Ancient people decorated his skull with plaster and gave it shell eyes to preserve the dead's facial features.

Brazilian graphics specialist Cicero Moraes claims it was the "first facial reconstruction in the world." The deceased man's face has now been recreated by Moraes using modern methods, providing a fascinating window into the past.

The skull inside the plaster sculpture was segmented, creating a digital structure of it, according to Moraes. We made a series of statistical projections to determine what the nose, lips, and ears could have looked like using the skull that was available in a virtual environment, according to the study.

We have a face that may resemble another person's face in real life when we interpolate the anatomical deformation data with the statistical projections," The result is an accurate reconstruction of the face complete with eyelashes, eyebrows, and marks indicating the dead man's age and the effects of climate on his skin.

Later, subjective components like hair, beards, and eyes were included "according to the climatic peculiarities of the region."

In the journal OrgOnLine, Moraes and his co-authors, forensic dentist Thiago Beaini and archaeologist Moacir Elias Santos, have now published their research.

The projected level of accuracy, according to the study we presented, is fairly high, this statement was stated by Moraes.

In 1953, archaeologist Kathleen Kenyon found seven artifacts, including this skull. The dead guy would have been a known individual at first, but through time would have evolved into a worshipped ancestor figure, according to the British Museum, which currently holds the skull.

The man would have been long forgotten by the time his skull was finally buried, the museum believes. It was the museum’s 3D uploads of the skull that enabled the new reconstruction.

However, this is not the first time a forensic facial reconstruction utilizing the so-called Jericho skull has been undertaken. A prior attempt in 2016 produced noticeably different outcomes.

As we worked with digital surgical planning, which eventually touched the field of forensic face approximation, we adopted a technique more focused on statistical data, taken from actual people, said Moraes.

According to the British Museum, the owner of the Jericho skull passed away with abscesses and severely rotted, shattered teeth that must have hurt.

His head shape had been permanently changed as a result of being tightly bound as an infant, and he had also recovered from having his nose shattered.
