The House Judiciary Committee has begun an investigation into classified documents related to President Joe Biden during his time as Vice President under the Obama Administration. The committee, led by Republican Representatives Jim Jordan and Mike Johnson, has sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland requesting documents from the Department of Justice, FBI, and White House, as well as the appointment of a special counsel for the case.

The White House admitted on Thursday that classified documents from Vice President Biden's tenure were discovered in his Delaware garage. This follows the confirmation that other classified documents were found in a locked closet at an office used by Biden in Washington on November 2nd, according to a statement from President's Counsel Richard Sauber in his Monday statement following a CBS News report that classified documents had been discovered there.

The letter expressed a focus on the lack of transparency and accountability within the executive branch, as the White House did not provide any information on how the classified documents were discovered in Biden's office and home, or when the discovery was reported. Garland stated that the documents were found on December 20th and that Biden's lawyer informed the DOJ that another document was located in Biden's Wilmington home earlier the same day. This revelation came a day after NBC News reported the discovery of additional documents at a second location.

Jordan and Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La., in a letter to Garland on Friday, expressed doubt whether the Department of Justice "deliberately concealed" the discovery made in November from the public, especially since it was done close to the 2022 elections, even though it is not common practice for the DOJ to announce the start of reviews.

The letter also falsely claims that DOJ's actions are inconsistent with previous actions, citing the example of Garland approving a search warrant for government documents in former President Trump's Florida home in August of last year despite evidence of Trump's voluntary cooperation.

The letter fails to mention that the Justice Department had been secretly looking into the Trump case for several months before the execution of the search warrant and that Trump had refused to hand over papers that had been subpoenaed by the DOJ and marked with a classification code.

In both cases, Garland did not make any public statements about the investigations until the President and former President publicly disclosed their interactions with the Justice Department.

Jordan and Johnson have reiterated their request for information regarding the investigation into Trump, which they had initially made last year when the committee was led by Democrats.

The Republicans compared the way the Justice Department dealt with the Biden documents to how it handled classified materials found at former President Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence, where a search warrant was executed.

In the Trump case, however, authorities raided Mar-a-Lago after several attempts to recover classified materials that they believed to be at the residence.

Biden's lawyers alerted the National Archives to the presence of these materials, however, this has been made public this week.
