WASHINGTON —  The legal team for President Joe Biden's White House indicated in a new letter that they are now considering recent demands from a Republican committee chair regarding the congressional probe into Biden's handling of secret documents and that they intend to assist to some extent.

White House counsel Stuart F. Delery stated in a letter to House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., on Monday that since Biden's private attorneys discovered government records at the Penn Biden Center, the White House has "fully cooperated" with the National Archives and Department of Justice to ensure that records with classified markings were given to the proper authorities.

In his letter, Delery stated, "We are reviewing your recent letters with the goal of seeking to accommodate legitimate oversight interests within the Committee's jurisdiction while also respecting the separation of powers and the constitutional and statutory obligations of the Executive Branch generally and the White House in particular.

The White House's willingness to share information with Congress, according to Delery, may have a limit. As I'm sure you are aware, one of these factors is the imperative necessity to safeguard the objectivity and independence of law enforcement investigations.

In the letter, it was stated that "the Biden Administration takes seriously the security and safety of federal documents, including classified material." "Regarding your wishes, we look forward to cooperating with you and your staff in a sincere manner. To that end, White House staff will get in touch with Committee staff to schedule a time to talk about this."

Delery revealed that the FBI searched Biden's Wilmington house "thoroughly and consensually" on Friday after the president's attorneys offered to grant access. As a result of Attorney General Merrick Garland appointing Robert Hur as a special counsel to look into the secret material discovered in Biden's home and a Washington, DC, office he used, he said that the White House had "continued to fully cooperate with DOJ."

Delery's letter was a reply to Comer's earlier this month-end letters demanding records and information for the probe. The GOP chairman, for instance, asked the White House to deliver documents retrieved from Biden's personal office at the Penn Biden Center, a list of all those who had access to it, and other evidence by Tuesday. In a follow-up letter, he demanded that any records and correspondence pertaining to the searches of Joe Biden's residences and other sites, as well as a visitor's log for Biden's Wilmington house after he was elected president, be provided by January 30. (According to the White House, there are no such visitor logs.)

According to Bob Bauer, the president's personal attorney, six additional items, including documents with secret markings, were discovered in Biden's Delaware residence as a consequence of the search on Friday.

Bauer claimed that when Biden's attorney gave full access to the property, documents were discovered at the Wilmington residence that appeared to be connected to both his time as vice president and his time serving in the U.S. Senate.

One of two significant House Republican inquiries into the Biden documents is Comer's investigation. The House Judiciary Committee, headed by Ohio's Rep. Jim Jordan, is also looking into the situation.
