Officials are moving quickly to outlaw the contentious Confucius institutions. A similar promise was made earlier by the new British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, during his election campaign in the summer. The Prime Minister had promised to close the 30 Chinese Cultural Institutes during his leadership campaign this summer. According to Sunak, the greatest danger to the security and prosperity of the United Kingdom this century is China.

Chinese philosopher Confucius is the inspiration behind the Confucius institution.

 Some of you have probably heard of him. A Chinese sage from 2500 years ago.

 His wise counsel evolved into China's constitution.

 Chinese civil workers have long been required to pass exams based on Confucian classics. 

But under Mao Zedong's rule in the 1960s, this trend was reversed. Confucius lost popularity.

 His sermons were outlawed in China. They destroyed his texts. His artefacts were tarnished. Mao instead supported Marxism.

Confucius institutes are established in Universities around the world

Confucius came back into fashion many years later. It was Xi Jinping's favourite endeavour. 

After becoming office in 2012, Xi Jinping had a keen interest in Confucianism.

 He began mentioning it in his remarks. He made use of them to advance his own reputation in China. 

Additionally, the President of China allocated specific money for the global expansion of Confucius Institutes.

 Their employment as a soft power tool to advance Chinese culture, values, and language was the goal. 

With 100 million students and growing, there are already over 530 Confucius institutes spread across dozens of nations and six continents.

 Beijing had planned to create 1000 such institutes by 2020, spending $10 billion annually on them.

These institutions, however, have been charged with serving as a front for the Communist Party of China to repress any dissident opinions on the nation.

Liz Truss also had plans of banning Confucius institutes

Liz Truss reportedly gave the order to get ready for a consultation on outlawing these institutes before she left. In fact, a lot of Conservative leaders are already advocating for a ban on these institutions, which are already outlawed in many other nations like Sweden.

 By denying financing to any university that houses one of these institutes, the US has eliminated a large number of them.
