The new escalation of tensions between Serbia and Kosovo, have reached a new peak. Although it started in November, this Monday, the threat of war became even more real.

Hundreds of ethnic Serbian workers embedded in the Kosovo police and the judicial branch, including judges and prosecutors, walked off the job in protest at a contentious decision to forbid Serbs living in Kosovo from using license plates issued by Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. 

For a very long time, Serbia has been threatening force against the former autonomous region of Yugoslavia, now independent Kosovo, and the continued tension between the two countries remains a potential flashpoint. 

Western attempts to broker a resolution have so far been unsuccessful.

Hours after that, members of the Serb minority in Mitrovica, a town in the north of Kosovo divided in two, set up new barricades to block the roads.

The decision taken on Monday night by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic to put the country's army on "high alert" and to send his chief of staff, Milan Mojsilovic, to the border strip with its neighbor, have shocked the world. 

There, the Kosovo Serb minority has maintained a road blockade since December 10th, in protest against the arrest of a former Serb policeman by Kosovar police forces, which has paralyzed traffic to two border posts with Serbia. 

The NATO mission in Kosovo, KFOR, is investigating the incident, in which "there were no injuries or material damage".

Kosovo and Serbia have a complex and strained relationship, with a history marked by conflict and tensions.

Kosovo is a predominantly Albanian-populated region in the Balkans that was once a part of Yugoslavia, which was a federal socialist state comprising several constituent republics, including Serbia.

The international community is divided on the issue of Kosovo's independence. 

Some countries, including the United States and most European Union member states, have recognized Kosovo as a sovereign state. Others, including Russia and a number of countries in the Balkans, have not recognized Kosovo's independence.

The relationship between Kosovo and Serbia has always been tense, with ongoing disputes over issues such as the status of Kosovo's border with Serbia and the rights of ethnic Serbs in Kosovo.

Now with the current war in Ukraine, could this become another proxy war between the world's superpowers?

This could occur if the superpowers were unable to find a peaceful resolution to the conflicts through diplomacy and negotiations, or if the proxy wars were to directly threaten the interests or security of the superpowers involved.

One aspect of the geopolitical importance of Kosovo and Serbia is their location along key trade routes. Kosovo is located at the crossroads of the East-West and North-South trade routes that connect Europe with Asia. This strategic location has made Kosovo an important hub for trade and commerce.

Serbia is also located along key trade routes, including the Danube River, which is an important waterway for trade and transportation. The Danube River runs through several countries in Central and Eastern Europe, including Serbia, and is an important link between Western and Eastern Europe.

In addition to their strategic location along trade routes, Kosovo and Serbia are also important for their natural resources. Kosovo has significant deposits of coal, lead, zinc, and other minerals, while Serbia has significant deposits of oil, natural gas, and other minerals.
